Petition Process

Petition Process for Tenth Bishop of Montana

The Standing Committee of the Diocese of Montana announces that the Petition Process for the next Bishop of Montana will be open on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 (the day that the Slate of Candidates is announced) through Wednesday May 15, 2019.  The Petition Process is the means by which a qualified person, not initially part of the slate, can be nominated for inclusion on the Slate of Candidates.  The Petition Process replaced “nominations from the floor” about 20 years ago.

In order for a petition to be considered, each petition must be signed by at least five clergy and five lay persons.  Each of the five petitioner clergy must be from separate congregations within the Diocese.  Each of the five lay persons must be a confirmed adult communicant in good standing from different congregations within the Diocese.  Each petition must be accompanied by all information required by the Standing Committee for initial consideration.
